In the turbulent days leading up to Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, poetry became a powerful tool for leftist political resistance and cultural awakening among people who were otherwise, for the most part, loyal to their king. Central to this revolutionary spirit was the “Dah Shab” (Ten Nights) poetry event, funded and supported by the German non-profit organization Goethe-Institut. This event provided an unprecedented platform for courageous poet and intellectuals on the left to break through an atmosphere thick with censorship and fear, offering critical commentary that boldly challenged the Shah’s government, which was desperately attempting to restore peace and stability. For the global left, however, the Shah’s nationalist stance was absolutely intolerable.
